WebDem Bones: The Ninth is the only house to specialize in bone magic, and makes extensive use of skeletal constructs. Especially on the battlefield, that kind of thing is just absolutely bread and butter. WebGideon the Ninth snagged at my attention, and I was beguiled by the promise of an atmospheric, Gothic-flavored chiller, packed with catacombs and sarcophagi, resurrections and revelations, fantasy and horror. Its not entirely clear if a sacrifice on this level can ever be purely free, and much of the rest of the trilogy is given over to trying to work out the implications. One of the things that makes Tamsyn Muirs fantasy novel Gideon the Ninth so deeply satisfying to read is the giddy joy it takes in playing with different genre tropes. Theres a hell of a lot of Bible stuff in there too. Moving a little bit into Harrow now: One of the things I love about the second-person narration in the book is it justifies itself on a character level, because Harrow is obviously disassociating with grief, and then also on a plot level, because of course, its not actually Harrow whos talking to us. But at the same time, Ive got a lot of mates who have also written books with central lesbian protagonists, women-loving-women protagonists, and oh my god, you can basically have them make out on screen and everyones like, Hm, very sibling-y! WebGideon is not a fireman, that has been tragically excised from the mythology. The set-up is genius: In some (possibly distant, possibly ancient, probably super-far-future) corner of the universe exist nine ancient houses with nine rulers and heirs adept in different forms of gooey, death-obsessed magic. But I think thats part of the joy of this trilogy, and of Harrow in particular: The way Muir takes the vicious horror of trauma, and then an incredibly bad pun, and slams them up against each other until sparks fly. And so what the real takeaway at the end of the day was, the love of your friends and hugs is the greatest thing that a woman can have. Harrow is haunted by the hundreds of innocent deaths involved in her creation. Heres me developing the entire society and its economics and what coinage its using and numismatics. In these surrounds, Gideon rewarded herself with a little plastic bag of porridge. The other relationships we see between necromancers and cavaliers arent always: Magnus and Abigail are married, but theres also an uncle and nephew pair, and Camilla and Palamedes are in some kind of deeply platonic love. Personally, I dont think Muir is playing into the Bury Your Gays trope so much as she is setting herself up to subvert it. But Muir uses the claustrophobia and narrowed focus to fine purpose, concentrating the action around a series of increasingly torturous tests (which serve both to hook the plot along and give some baseline explanations for the entwined science, religion and necromantic magic on which her universe depends) and the relationships that develop between the limited cast of characters particularly Gideon and Harrow. [24], Writing in The New York Times, El-Mohtar called Gideon the Ninth a "devastating debut that deserves every ounce of hype its received" and praised it as "deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original. Constance Grady: I have a hard time working out exactly how I feel about volume two of this trilogy. Not to [talk] down here in any way on Magnus and Abigail, who are not really a battlefield couple, at least you dont get to see them doing that too much. It is honestly one of the best books I have ever read about dissociation. Theres a passage in Harrow that I have read to many friends who have experience with dissociation or other forms of trauma, and it hits all of us the same way which is to say it leaves us reeling. Theres a compelling argument to be made that the relationship between Harrow and Gideon is too toxic to root for or romanticize, and thats one of the major critiques Ive seen of the whole Locked Tomb trilogy. But it also gives Harrow some cracks in her facade of bitchiness, a weak spot in her armor that she is working furiously to compensate for. The Emperor needs necromancers. WebGideon the Ninth, Muir's first novel and the first book of the Locked Tomb series, was published in 2019. Harrow the Ninth, an Amazon pick for Best SFF of 2020 and the New York Times and USA Today bestselling sequel to Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the Emperor's haunted space station. I want to start by looking at this incredibly complex mythology youve created. Despite their clashing personalities and mutual hatred of each other, Gideon is Harrow's only real choice of cavalier, primarily due to an atmospheric contamination incident around the time of their births that killed the rest of the Ninth House's children. Do you think Gideon is coming back in the end? But I think that if you have a couple or if you have a pair of girls, the problem is that its a hell of a lot more difficult to have people see that as romantic. "[6] In her review for Vox, Constance Grady commended Muir's ability to slide her "voice seamlessly from Lovecraftian gothic mode into a slangy contemporary mode without ever undercutting one or the other for cheap comedy. With that said, the stuff we get in this book about the Lyctor mythology is incredibly rich, and Harrows reactions to the Emperor-God/John are one of the deepest wells of irony in the whole book. She is so reverent to him, and he is so clearly just some guy who somehow lucked his way into an obscene amount of power. Does that strike you as the case? Because Harrow when shes thinking of herself is not how she talks. Harrow initially treats Gideon as a liability and disappears for long periods of time to work on her own, leaving Gideon to wander Canaan House and interact with the other Houses. Counting five full breaths to mark time, Gideon Nav, Cavalier of the Ninth House, came following behind, praying that her unfamiliar sword wouldnt tangle in her robes (p. 69). If Gideon had been named anything else, she would have also attempted to make that into an extremely banal, everyday name. But now they have to depend on each other to survive because, of course, the minute everyone arrives at Caanan House (the creepy mansion), all communications are blacked out, all the fancy space shuttles they came in are pushed into the sea, and they are told there's a very good chance that all of them are going to die, because there's something horrible hidden inside Caanan House. And you get to see it reflected in all these different pairs. And in fact, in the mythology, its not meant to be romantic at all, but it inevitably has that shaded into it. Where do you fall.
